Exploring the outdoors can be challenging for people with limited mobility, but one organization is working to make nature more accessible.
SOAR Experiences offers public hikes at different venues in New York and Connecticut.
Deer Pond Farm in Sherman is one of them.
Through specialized adaptive equipment, individuals with mobility limitations can safely and comfortably enjoy outdoor experiences that might otherwise be out of reach.
The equipment is designed to improve accessibility while giving participants greater independence.
The organization also offers guided tours at several locations, with each experience tailored to meet participants’ needs.
Scott Trager, founder of SOAR, says, "It's also community building because there's a lot of people who are isolated and we're bringing people out in groups and there's camaraderie. There's the ability to go out and just enjoy being in a group setting outdoors."
The personalized tours allow visitors to connect with nature, take in scenic surroundings and enjoy the outdoors in a safe and supportive environment. By removing barriers and creating inclusive opportunities, the program helps ensure that more people can experience the beauty of nature, regardless of mobility challenges.
SOAR Experiences is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and there is no charge for the public outings.
