The Connecticut Department of Transportation has revised the schedule for a planned Interstate 95 bridge maintenance project that was originally set to begin Oct. 26 and run overnight Monday through Friday mornings in communities from New Haven to Greenwich.
Under the updated plan, the work will now be completed in phases, with the first phase beginning Sunday, Nov. 1. The project involves cleaning catch basins, also known as scuppers, on bridges along both the northbound and southbound sides of I-95. DOT officials said the work is critical to maintaining proper drainage and helping prevent flooding on the highway.
To minimize impacts on drivers, crews will focus first on New Haven, West Haven, Orange and Milford. Work is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday nights through Thursday mornings and is expected to continue through mid-November. Work will not occur on state holidays.
Once the first phase is complete, the DOT plans to release an updated schedule for the next phase of work in the Fairfield County communities along the I-95 corridor. Those include Stratford, Bridgeport, Fairfield, Westport, Norwalk, Stamford and Greenwich.
DOT officials also said the schedule remains weather-dependent as Connecticut heads into the colder months, so timelines could change.
"As this work begins, we’re reminding drivers of the important role they play in keeping Connecticut’s roadways safe. When approaching the work zone, drivers are reminded to slow down, ditch the distractions, and remain vigilant to help keep themselves, other motorists, and workers safe," DOT Spokesperson Eva Zymaris said in an email.
