A 66-year-old Marine Corps veteran from Bridgeport says he was left "in financial ruin" after falling victim to a phone scam that cost him thousands of dollars and his identity.
Mitchell Samuels provided his bank and Social Security information to a caller who falsely claimed Samuels had won millions of dollars, only to have multiple Social Security checks subsequently stolen from his account as a result of the scam.
U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal has launched an investigation into the case and plans to contact the bank to help repair Samuels' damaged credit, though he noted the chances of recovering the stolen funds are slim.
In response to the incident, the Bridgeport Police Department is urging residents never to share personal or financial information with unknown individuals over the phone or online.
