Police say a man was fatally shot through his Fordham apartment door on Monday evening.
The shooting happened on Creston Avenue around 8:45 p.m.
Police say Rashaun Ahart was answering a knock at the door of his apartment when shots were fired through the door and struck him multiple times. They say there were six other people in the apartment at the time of the shooting, including two young girls.
They say Ahart, known as "Big John," was a single father of a 6-year-old girl. Friends and family say Ahart was raising his daughter alone inside his mom's second-floor apartment, and that his wife passed away four years ago.
Police say they responded to a 911 call of a person shot and discovered the 35-year-old with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest.
Ahart was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Neighbors say they recall hearing at least 10 gunshots.
Police say Ahart does have a criminal record and was arrested several times in the past, but family members say he has been turning his life around.
Police say no arrests have been made, and they are still investigating
