Eight months after Mayor Bloomberg (R-NYC) called for new safety measures to improve the Administration for Children's Services, ACS says it is making progress. The deputy mayor for Health and Human Services and the ACS commissioner will announce the progress made in a series of reforms next week. A citywide review of agencies that deal with children found that between ACS, the NYPD and the Department of Education, there was a need to strengthen their performance when dealing with possible abuse cases.Under the new reforms, a child abuse investigation will automatically begin when a student misses 10 consecutive days of school. Nixzmary Brown, the Brooklyn girl cops say was killed by her parents, was absent from school more than 40 times. The reforms also suggest that a NYPD lieutenant be stationed at ACS headquarters as a first point of contact in child abuse cases.
