Construction is almost complete at a Mott Haven building that will bring affordable housing to the Bronx, despite a push against the renovation.
According to the community organization Acorn, the building at 674 E. 136th St. was frequented by squatters in 2004 who didn?t want to leave. A fire, which was later deemed to be the result of an electrical problem, also started at the property. Despite the setbacks, Acorn worked to renovate the building. Many neighbors say they are pleased to see the area headed for a positive turnaround.
Acorn will start accepting applications for the 40 apartments later this year.
