Allergy season is making its presence felt as coughing, sneezing and itchy eyes become harder to avoid when pollen levels rise.
Tree pollen is currently the main trigger, according to Dr. Philip Hemmers, an allergist with Saint Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT.
Hemmers said the first step in managing symptoms is taking allergy medication regularly.
If symptoms worsen, Hemmers said it is important to see a doctor, as some people may need to switch from over‑the‑counter medication to a prescription.
He also advised avoiding known allergens whenever possible.
“On those really beautiful sunny windy days, you want to limit your time outdoors and you want to limit exposure outdoors,” Hemmers said.
Hemmers also recommends wearing a mask and sunglasses during activities such as gardening or lawn care.
He said those steps can help reduce the amount of pollen that enters the eyes and nose.
