The American Red Cross says there are three easy steps to take to get prepared for the incoming nor'easter.
The American Red Cross recommends:
1. Building an emergency kit
2. Creating an evacuation plan
3. And knowing your community's emergency response plan
The emergency kit should include a gallon of water per person, per day, non-perishable food, a flashlight, battery-powered radio, first aid kit, medications, baby supplies if needed, and toiletries.
The Red Cross adds to have copies of important papers, cellphone chargers, extra cash, blankets, maps of the area, and emergency contact information.
It's a good idea to plan routes to local shelters and make plans for pets as well.
If you live in low-lying areas, move your car to higher ground.
Should you lose power during the storm:
1. Use flashlights, not candles
2. When using a generator, keep it dry
3. Plug appliances directly into the generator
4. Use perishable food from your refrigerator first, then from the freezer
5. Leave one light on in your home, so you know when the power comes back
6. Eliminate unnecessary travel, especially on the roads, as traffic lights could be out
