"Romeo And Juliet" may be one of the most famous plays ever written. And now the classic by William Shakespeare has inspired a musical comedy about to open on Broadway called "& Juliet." It reimagines the story to ask, “What if Juliet lives?”
"Shakespeare and Anne rewrote my story, so I have a second chance at life," says Lorna Courtney who plays Juliet.
Courtney is referring to Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare’s wife. Hathaway is played Betsy Wolfe.
"You don't need to know a ton about Shakespeare…As long as you know Juliet was supposed to die - except in this version. That's all you need to know," says Wolfe.
"& Juliet" is set to the music of Max Martin, the pop hit maker who wrote some of the biggest hits by Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Katy Perry, NSYNC and many other acts.
The book of "& Juliet" is written by David West Read, writer and executive producer of the TV series "Schitt's Creek."
"& Juliet" is in previews at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Its opening is scheduled for Nov. 17. A production is also currently running in London.
