A man was shot and killed by police on the Upper East Side of Manhattan Thursday night.

Police say around 7 p.m., the 20-year-old man pointed a gun at another man inside of an elevator at a building on Madison Avenue. Then, he went to a deli blocks away and pointed the same gun at a deli employee, saying, “Call 911. I’m going to the hospital to shoot it up there.” He also took the employee’s cellphone.

Police say the man then went to Mount Sinai Hospital where he encountered an off-duty officer who was working security. A struggle ensued before he was escorted out of the building by the officer. Blocks away, he encountered officers from the 19th Precinct and fired shots at them and the officers fired back. At the same time, commuters at a nearby bus stop were just getting off an MTA bus.

“Everyday, our officers put on their uniforms and they encounter dangerous situations across the city but it's another kind of danger when someone goes into a deli and a hospital and opens fire directly at the NYPD,” said Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera.

The man was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Police recovered the suspect’s gun at the scene. The incident was also captured on surveillance video and body cameras, according to police.
