The Milford Fire Department says someone stole a car at the Milford rest stop and caused a major gas leak Thursday night.
They say a driver was pumping gas at the southbound rest area when they went inside to use the bathroom.
Authorities say while the driver was inside, someone jumped in the car and took off with the gas pump still inserted.
That caused the nozzle to break off and gas to continue flowing onto the ground.
Officials say about 44 gallons were spilled and that some of it went into two storm drains.
Crews were called in to the clean up the fuel spill.
State police are investigating.
