The Orange Land Trust is warning people to be careful around black bears after one visited the home of its president.
A member of the nonprofit says a bear came to the front door of the president's home on Surrey Drive Wednesday and snacked on his pumpkin.
Members say bears are not common in Orange.
They also say that most bears want to avoid human interaction. Anyone who sees a bear in their yard, should stay inside and do not make any attempts to feed it.
However, if you see one while outside, members recommend the following:
Stay calm. Do not panic or make sudden movements.
Do not run. Running can trigger a bear's instinct to chase.
Back away slowly from the animal and give it plenty of space.
Do not climb a tree to escape, as black bears are excellent climbers.
Never approach cubs.
