The Milford Board of Alderman voted earlier this week to allow Richard Smith to become the city's next mayor.
Smith, the city's police commission chairman, will start Monday.
Current Mayor Ben Blake will step down on that day.
Blake is joining Gov. Ned Lamont's administration as the administrative law judge for Connecticut's Workers' Compensation Commission.
Blake served as the city's mayor for 12 years.
Smith will serve as mayor until the term is up in November when a mayoral election will be held.
