Authorities have released police body camera footage from a fatal officer-involved shooting in Meriden that occurred during an apparent assault outside a home on Sagamore Road.

The video, released by the Connecticut Office of Inspector General, contains disturbing images. Officials say it shows Officer Anthony Offiaeli responding to the scene and confronting a man who was actively striking another person with a baseball bat in broad daylight.

According to investigators, the officer repeatedly ordered the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Robert Lee Jenkins III, to drop the bat as Jenkins continued to beat the victim despite those commands.

When Jenkins failed to comply, the officer fired several shots, fatally wounding Jenkins.

The victim who was being beaten also died from injuries sustained during the assault.

The Office of Inspector General, along with Connecticut State Police, continues to investigate the incident.
