The oldest African-American church in Bridgeport marked a milestone over the weekend.
Bethel A.M.E. Church celebrated its 200th anniversary with a special Sunday service.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal joined Mayor Joe Ganim in paying tribute to the occasion.
Church leaders say the congregation is at the height of its ability to impact the city in a positive way.
"We want to send a message to the city of Bridgeport that we're here and we will not fail the community, that we are reviving our reputation as a leading church in the city of Bridgeport," said Pastor Iona Smith Nze.
The church also held a gala to commemorate the anniversary.
