Jazmarie Melendez announced her resignation from the Bridgeport City Council Wednesday.

Melendez faces six counts of misrepresenting eligibility requirements as part of the fallout from the 2023 mayoral election that had to be redone.

She says she's resigning, in part, because the council hasn't adequately served its purpose to provide checks and balances to Mayor Joe Ganim, and it hasn't held Ganim accountable.

Melendez also taking exception to the city budget, saying it funds police at the expense of education and social services.

"It's unclear as to the reasons why Jazmarie Melendez resigned her position on the City Council," said Mayor Ganim in a statement.
