The New York Islanders announced Thursday its intent to relocate its affiliate, The Bridgeport Islanders, from Connecticut to Hamilton, Ontario for the start of the 2026-2027 season.

The move requires approval by the American Hockey League Board of Governors. Pending approval, the team name, official team logo and ticketing information for the Hamilton team will be announced at a later date.

"On behalf of the entire New York Islanders organization, I want to extend our deepest thanks to the City of Bridgeport and the incredibly loyal fans who have supported this team for the past 25 years. From the early days of the Sound Tigers to our time as the Bridgeport Islanders, this community has been the heart of our AHL operations. We are grateful for the memories, the partnerships, and the passion the fans in Connecticut have shown our players and staff," says Kelly Cheeseman, president of business operations for the Islanders and UBS Arena.

The Islanders says it is committed to working with Bridgeport on a successful transition for Total Mortgage Arena.

Bridgeport officials also confirmed the move Thursday and agree they want to ensure the arena remains open.

In a statement, Mayor Joe Gamin thanked the Islanders and Oak View Group for bringing sports fan and concert goes to the city.

"Bridgeport has earned the reputation as the 'Arts and Entertainment Capital of Connecticut,' and the Arena has been a major part of that story. I am committed to working with our state partners on a public process that will reimagine what this facility can be, and how we can continue to foster Bridgeport's arts and entertainment identity."
