Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter says while "no confidence" votes by the Bridgeport Police Union are "purely symbolic" and "very common" - with the past several chiefs also having faced them - he's "eager to hear all the concerns" officers are expressing.
"I'm open to suggestions on ways that we can make the department better," Porter told News 12.
Michael Salemme, III, president of the Bridgeport police union, Local 1159, says the "no confidence" vote will take place at 7 a.m. Wednesday at an undisclosed location in Bridgeport.
Salemme cited concerns about overtime being assigned "on a political rather than a contractual basis" and promotions failing to occur, despite being called for in the union's collective bargaining agreement.
Porter said violent crime has decreased on his watch, and in spite of "a severe officer shortage."
"Working with less and working smart, we've been able to maintain and reduce crime," Porter said.
