A Bridgeport teenager is still in critical condition after being struck by a pickup truck while on a scooter.
AJ DeJesus, 18, was one of two people riding a scooter on Kossuth Street and Berkshire Avenue on Wednesday when police say the pair was struck by the vehicle and dragged for blocks.
Raymond Soler told News 12 Connecticut that his little brother is fighting for his life at Bridgeport Hospital. He said that it seems like only yesterday when AJ was little. His family is devastated, wondering how they'll carry on without his smiling young face to brighten their lives.
"My prayers and thoughts are with the family, pray for them, and I pray that people start practicing safety on the roads," said City Councilman Jorge Cruz.
Cruz says he's heartbroken by the string of serious scooter accidents across the city over the past six weeks. It began with a fatal crash on Sylvan Avenue May 30, when a scooter collided with a car at the intersection of Balsam Avenue.
On June 17, police say two people were hospitalized following yet another crash at Housatonic Avenue and East Washington Avenue.
Cruz is calling on everyone in the city to lend their love and support to his family. He says that regardless of how the individual accidents took place and who was at fault, what is crucial now is that drivers in Bridgeport be extra vigilant, especially when sharing the street with two-wheeled vehicles of any kind.
