A 63-year-old Bridgeport woman was the first in the region to undergo double mastectomy surgery involving three nerve blocks.
Nancy Medina says there is a history of breast cancer in her family, and she went for her annual screening in July.
By August, doctors told her she had breast cancer.  She says she was scared, but the doctors believed it was contained and that they would be able to remove it all with surgery.
On Sept. 29, Medina had a double mastectomy at Saint Vincent's Medical Center.
To help reduce her pain, doctors used three nerve blocks during the seven-hour procedure. The first time three have been done in the region.
Medina says she's planning to go back to work at the beginning of next month and is recovering nicely.
