? Bronx gay rights activists and couples rallied in favor of same-sex marriage at Cadman Plaza Saturday as the NY Court of Appeals is deciding the issue.
Among some of the couples were Elmer Lokkin and Gustavo Archila. They say they were married in Canada two years ago and have spent 61 years together, but the U.S. does not recognize their marriage. Another couple has been together for 33 years, but when they got into a car accident, the hospital refused to let them see each other because they were not "family."
New York?s highest court took up the issue Wednesday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R-NYC) says if the court allows gay marriage he will allow marriage licenses to be issued. Similar cases are pending in New Jersey and Washington state.
