The Brooklyn nonprofit "Tools and Tiaras" in Sunset Park is exposing girls to male-dominated fields like welding, carpentry and more.
“We expose girls, 6 to 17, to careers within male-populated industries. They learn electrical, plumbing, engineering, welding, sheet metal, carpentry, iron working, roofing," said founder Judaline Cassidy.
She says the idea came from her own experience as a union plumber.
“I remembered when I was a little girl, I felt invincible. And I wanted to be Wonder Woman and a lawyer in that order. And I remembered how invincible you feel. Until the world tells you that you can't. I figured if I am able to catch girls really young, from 6 years old, when they have that, they will never lose it by putting tools in their hands," said Cassidy.
"Tools and Tiaras" has summer programs, monthly workshops, and will soon have after-school programs. Cassidy says she hopes to expose girls to careers they may not have otherwise considered.
“There's no college debt, right? You could earn a college degree while doing some of these union apprenticeships, and you get the best out of health care," said Cassidy.
"Tools and Tiaras" will have a grand opening in Sunset Park on Nov. 14.
