Budget cuts force two Bridgeport elementary schools to close their doors

The Bridgeport School District finalized plans Monday to make cuts in order to fill its 11 million dollar budget gap.Newfield Elementary is closing down for the upcoming school year due to budget cuts.

The Bridgeport School District finalized plans Monday to make cuts in order to fill its 11 million dollar budget gap.Newfield Elementary is closing down for the upcoming school year due to budget cuts. The students who live very close to the school are to be sent off to another school in the district. Barnum Annex is another school that will have to be closed down. The Board of Education and City Council also finalized 42 staff positions through retirement and attrition and requiring most high school students to take public transportation to get to class.Superintendent John Ramos says that the district?s cuts have never affected the students in the past five years. He says they had no option this year. Ramos believes in the commitment and tenacity of the teachers and students.
