City Council OKs Bloomberg's garbage removal plan
The Bronx is one step closer to a new plan to get rid of its own trash.
The City Council approved Mayor Bloomberg?s (R-NY) waste management plan Wednesday. Under the plan, the city?s trash will be shipped away on barges rather than trucks. The plan makes each borough responsible for its own trash and trash removal. Currently, the Bronx handles its own waste as well as trash from Manhattan and Queens. The plan promises to reduce pollution from truck exhaust and help thin traffic congestion.
Once the new system is in place, the trash picked up curbside will be taken to waterfront transfer stations. From the marine stations, barges will then take the garbage to secondary transfer terminals, where it will be moved to out-of-state landfills.
