If you've driven through Stamford recently, you may have noticed dozens of black metal poles going up around school zones.

"I was wondering what they were doing over there with some of the construction," resident Salvatore Tartaglione says.

Speed cameras will soon be turned on in parts of the city, but officials haven't provided an exact start date.

Mayor Caroline Simmons had previously said Stamford's automated speed enforcement program would launch at 14 locations across seven school zones by September.

It's now the middle of October and the cameras themselves aren't even in place yet.

"I didn't even know there were speed cameras coming to this area," resident Gwen Learey says.

The mayor's office claims supply delays have pushed the official launch back.

The city says it's hoping to have the cameras up and running within the next two weeks.

Funds collected from fines will go toward roadway safety and transportation mobility improvements, the city says.

There will be a 45-day warning period before fines go out.

While the start date has yet to be announced, one thing is certain: people's opinions on the cameras are still very mixed.

"If you know that they're there, they're fine," Learey says. "If you don't know that they're there, they suck."

"I think they are great in areas like pedestrian walkways, schools, and where you do have a lot of pedestrian traffic," Tartaglione says. "But I do believe the police department does have their own job in that they need to keep speeding down as well, and it shouldn't just be through cameras and AI."

The city says speed cameras will be located on streets around the following schools: Cloonan Middle School, Springdale Elementary School, Dolan Middle School and Toquam Elementary School, Stamford High School, Julia A. Stark Elementary School, K.T. Murphy Elementary School, and Strawberry Hill School.
