Coney Island Beach Sports Festival brings Brooklyn together for fitness, fun and friendly competition

The Coney Island boardwalk transformed into a hub of fitness, games and community spirit Saturday as hundreds gathered for the ninth annual Brooklyn Beach Sports Festival.
The free, family-friendly event invited New Yorkers of all ages to stay active while enjoying activities ranging from fitness competitions to beach games.
Participants as young as 8 years old took part in everything from air hockey and hula hoops to cornhole, meditation and other challenges designed to bring families together despite the summer heat.
For many attendees, the festival was a chance to enjoy Coney Island’s energy while trying something new. Lena, an eventgoer, said the atmosphere made the day special.
"It's so much fun out here. You have all the rides, a nice vibe, always a good time we're planning on doing more. Enjoying the weather, the beach and hopefully the cyclone," Lena said.
The event also featured a calisthenics skills exhibition and competition, where athletes tested their strength through pull-ups, dips, push-ups and freestyle routines. NYC Parks said competitors traveled from across the state, with many preparing for months for a chance to take home a prize.
Yahsir, one of the competitors, said the sport has taken him beyond New York City.
"I do competing around throughout the city. Been to different states, countries from Mexico City, Canada. it's something that's good that you can keep doing. I've been training and running a little bit, so I'm gonna just go out there and see what I do," Yahsir said.
Beyond the competitions, families could also learn more about the environment around them. Urban Park Rangers gave visitors a closer look at the wildlife living off Coney Island's shoreline, while others learned more about becoming a New York City lifeguard.
Organizers say the goal of the festival goes beyond one day of competition- it is about encouraging healthier lifestyles and getting more New Yorkers involved in recreation programs.
"We would like for you to see this as a way to maybe encourage you to come to the recreation centers and build up your physical fitness. So next year, you'll be prepared to come out here and really compete," Ronee Mattinglay, deputy chief of Recreation for NYC Parks, said.
While this year's festival has come to an end, organizers say they hope the event continues to inspire Brooklyn residents to stay active, build community connections and make fitness part of their everyday lives.
