The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles has announced that their new Mobile ID system is launching on Nov. 18.
The free app will allow residents to verify their identity and age using just their mobile device.
DMV Commissioner Tony Guerrera calls the project a milestone in embracing technology and offering new tools to the public.
“This is a big step forward in our ongoing efforts to deliver convenient access to our services,” he said.
Mobile ID will be accepted by the Transportation Security Administration at participating security checkpoints nationwide.
Businesses won’t be required to accept Mobile ID but are free to choose to, according to the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. Businesses who opt to participate will be required to use a compatible verification app.
DMV officials say acceptance will initially be limited. It cannot be shown to law enforcement as a substitute for a physical driver’s license, used for voting or as a flash pass.
In a release announcing the news, officials praised the efforts of the teams who worked to make Mobile ID possible.
“This launch reflects our commitment to keeping pace with technology and offering residents more choice in how they carry their identification,” said Department of Administrative Services Commissioner Michelle Gilman. “I especially want to thank our colleagues in DAS BITS for their IT support and DAS Procurement for their assistance navigating the complex contracting issues involved in bringing this program to launch."
The app will be available on the App Store and Google Play. For more information, click here.
