The Royal Caribbean cruise line issued its first detailed accounts Wednesday of the events surrounding a Greenwich man?s disappearance.
George Smith IV was on his honeymoon on a Mediterranean cruise when he vanished. Smith was last seen on the ship during the early morning hours of July 5. Bloodstains were found running from the balcony of Smith?s cabin to the lifeboats. The cruise line has now revealed Smith?s wife, Jennifer Hagel-Smith, was found sleeping in a corridor far from the couple?s cabin the night he disappeared.
The FBI has been investigating the case, as well as reports of an alleged rape of a female passenger by the young man last seen with Smith. Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean has denied allegations by Smith?s family that it mishandled the investigation. It also disputes claims by Hagel-Smith that she was poorly treated after her husband disappeared. No one has been charged and Smith?s body was never found.
