Police in Darien are warning residents about a telephone scam that is targeting the elderly.
Investigators say the suspects call elderly people and pretend to be their grandchild who is in trouble in Canada. Police say they convince the victims to wire thousands of dollars out of the country. According to police, at least four of the telephone scams happened to Darien residents since April. They say an 80-year-old woman was conned out of $7,000. Police say one man did not fall for the scam and contacted authorities.
Detectives say the phone scams are being run by organized crime, which they say makes it difficult to follow up on. Western Union security is trying to help police nab the suspects.
