As the war in Ukraine continues, refugees are fleeing Ukraine in hopes of a better life - some of them coming right here to western Connecticut.
A Darien woman is making sure they get what they need.
"When you see people like Alisa, a sweet little girl arrive on your doorstep, you just want to help," said Fiona Porter.
Porter, a successful real estate agent, is making sure Ukrainians like 8-year-old Alisa have all the essentials.
Porter has worked tirelessly to find them food, clothing and housing.
"This was something I felt I could really give back and everything felt so meaningful," said Porter.
She's helping these people escape the horrors of war they saw in their country.
"It's really an inconceivable situation, and I'm here to help and they all know I'm a call away," said Porter.
Porter went to school in Moscow and can communicate with Ukrainians like Alisa.
Alisa is starting school in Stamford next month. Her mother Iryna is expecting her second child. They spend all their time together while Alisa's father fights the war back home.
"They were clearly very traumatized by what they saw," said Porter.
With Christmas only days away, Porter is now helping 35 families, including Alisa's.
"Thank you, America," said Alisa as she held up a Ukrainian flag she made with her mother.
People can donate by calling Fiona Porter at 203-434-0493 or Jewish Family Services of Greenwich, an official refugee resettlement agency supporting Ukrainians and other people from warn torn countries. Donations can be made by clicking here or by phone at 203-622-1881.
