The New York developers who own the site of the now decommissioned PSEG power plant in Bridgeport Harbor want to demolish the site, including the plant's 500-foot smokestack that's become a symbol of the city, but Mayor Joe Ganim says he will not approve the Sept. 28 date they have requested.

"That's the same weekend as Soundside Music Fest - though there are many other considerations that go into my decision, as well, including the fact that many residents consider the smokestack to be an enduring symbol of the city worth preserving," Ganim told News 12. "But the ultimate decision lies with the owners - and they have made it clear that it would be too expensive to preserve the smokestack. Therefore, it looks like the smokestack will come down soon."
