October is Mental Health Awareness Month, and a nonprofit agency in Litchfield will host a fundraiser so it can continue to provide services to people struggling with mental health issues.
Executive Director John Simoncelli says Greenwoods Counseling Referrals Incorporated provides mental health assessments and referrals for people struggling with everything from depression to addiction, at no cost to the patient if that person cannot afford to pay.
Greenwoods' mobile van for mental health help will host their Strut Your Mutt fundraiser Sunday during a dog fashion show.
The proceeds from the event will help the community outreach team to provide mobile addiction and recovery services in Litchfield County.
Simoncelli says that more often than not, people who need mental health services have no idea where to turn.
"I think if you know what to do if you have a problem with your elbow, or you've got some kind of other medical condition, I'm going to call my doctor. But if you're struggling with anxiety, depression, addiction - most people say I don't even know who to call. So, I think that's the value of the work that we do here."
