DOT leaders ask legislators to expand variable speed limits

Officials at the Connecticut State Department of Transportation urged legislators to expand variable speed limits.

DOT Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto asked lawmakers to expand the program on Thursday.

Currently, the DOT can only drop speed limits for bad weather, but some lawmakers worry about unintended consequences for drivers.

The DOT also wants to make automated speed cameras in work zones permanent.

Officials said a pilot program has dropped speeding by almost 20%.
