Almost one month after being sentenced to five years in prison, former State Senator Ernie Newton addressed a Democratic town committee in Bridgeport.
Newton told the audience that he made a mistake but did not think the punishment fit the crime. Several audience members said they were disappointed by Newton?s actions, but agreed racial discrimination may have played a role in his sentencing. Many said they would consider voting for him if he runs for office again.
Newton pleaded guilty to taking a bribe, diverting campaign contributions and tax evasion. He will begin his prison sentence on April 7.
