Fairfield officials say First Selectman Bill Gerber is recovering after undergoing surgery Tuesday morning to remove a brain tumor.

The surgical team reported the procedure went well and that Gerber is awake and in good spirits.

Gerber announced over the weekend that he would be taking a leave of absence following his diagnosis.

Christine Vitale will serve as interim first selectman.
