FDA says Taylor Farms lettuce tested for Cyclospora was a 'false positive,' none detected

The suspected source of the Cyclospora outbreak turned out to be a false positive, according to the Food & Drug Administration.
In an update on the outbreak on Sunday, the FDA said the sample of lettuce given to them by Taylor Farmer de Mexico does not have the parasite present.
Instead, they say that there is a complexity in the detection of Cyclospora and that their original "finding does not represent true amplification and should be considered a false positive."
"Today, FDA apologized to us," Taylor Farms wrote in a statement on Sunday. "Yesterday, FDA informed Taylor Fresh Foods that one of its iceberg lettuce products from central Mexico tested positive for Cyclospora. Today, we were informed that FDA made a mistake, and this was a false positive."
The FDA is continuing to collect and analyze the samples, but as of Sunday, they said there is no confirmed positive sample results.
Based on the initial information by the FDA regarding the sample, Taylor Farms recalled their iceberg lettuce grown and process in central Mexico out of an abundance of caution.
"Our thoughts remain with everyone who has fallen ill in this outbreak. We are committed to working with public health authorities as the ongoing outbreak investigation continues," Taylor Farms wrote.
