More than 1,000 people turned out for a celebration in Norwalk Sunday as plans to turn a crumbling power plant into a public park moved forward.

"So today is a huge celebration for us because not only are we launching the vision for the park that we've gained so much public comment and feedback on, but we're also talking about Manresa Wilds, the newest evolution and phase for Manresa Island," said Jessica Vonashek, of Manresa Island Corporation. "Manresa Wilds is the park that will reconnect the community to the water for the first time in more than 75 years, and today is a celebration to kick that off."

Organizers say Sunday was the last community engagement meeting before the final vision for Manresa Wilds is revealed.

The final park design will be unveiled at the end of the year.
