After fighting for nearly a half-decade, the fight to save the Brooklyn Botanical Garden may soon be coming to an end. 

Back in 2017, a new 17-story affordable housing development was underway across from the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, when Alicia Boyd, founder of The Movement to Protect the People and Flower Lovers Against Corruption read into the contracts when the development was approved and said important things were overlooked.  

“They failed to sit there and do an environmental impact statement so that they could look further on what type of damage the sewage would have, bringing in those additional apartments and toilets,” said Boyd.  

She also says that the proposed square footage was first proposed at 680 square feet per unit, saying this many units would cause damage to the sewage in the neighborhood. The units were later revised and brought back to 100 square feet per unit.  

The attorneys representing the developers claimed on Monday that this case is not a legal issue and has asked the judge to reverse the case since the development was approved four years ago.
