Norwalk fire officials say working smoke detectors helped alert a person to evacuate their home following a fire overnight Sunday.

It happened at home on Tonetta Circle just before 1 a.m.

The detectors alerted the person to a fire in the basement which then extended into the first floor living area, officials say. They add that the detectors played a crucial role in giving them enough time to safely evacuate.

There is significant fire damage to the basement and two rooms on the first floor. There is also extensive smoke damage throughout the residence.

A total of 28 firefighters responded. No one was injured.

Fire officials want to remind people that while they change their clocks for the beginning of daylight savings, they should also replace the batteries in detectors.
