The Southern Regional Sickle Cell Association hosted its 15th annual walk-a-thon to fight sickle cell anemia Saturday.
September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. The association is using this month, and its walk-a-thon, to encourage people to break the cycle and get tested.
Medical experts say more than 70,000 Americans suffer from sickle cell anemia, an inherited blood disease. The association says it will use the money raised to provide screenings and education to help relieve the lifetime of pain the disease can cause.
