Police in Stamford have arrested a man they believe could be responsible for a rash of recent burglaries.
Fernando Martinez Avila was arrested Friday after allegedly breaking into a KFC on West Main Street. Police say a witness saw Avila break in through a vent on the roof around 1:30 a.m. When police arrived, they found Avila walking away from the KFC. They say he was sweaty, dirty and had cuts on his hands. Police say the witness actually saw Avila while he was entering the restaurant for a second time to retrieve his cell phone, which he left in the manager's office.
Police say Avila, who is wanted on a warrant out of Dallas, Texas, has since confessed to the KFC burglary. Police are investigating whether he is connected to a string of similar burglaries throughout the city.
