What's regarded as the most prestigious trophy in all of sports made a pitstop in Fairfield County Friday.

Sandy Hook's Mackie Samoskevich, who helped the Florida Panthers win this year's Stanley Cup, brought the trophy to the Newtown Youth Academy.

“It's definitely special to bring it here," Samoskevich says. "The Boston Bruins brought it here in 2013, and I was one of those kids playing hockey with them, so it’s pretty cool to see it come full circle."

Hundreds of hockey fans packed the building to get an autograph and a picture with greatness.

“It’s just been a great ride, and we’re so proud of Mackie to bring the cup back to Sandy Hook and Newtown," says Mark Diot, of Bethel. "It’s just great for the community, it’s great for everybody, and it’s just a wonderful day for our area."

Samoskevich played for the University of Michigan from 2021-2023.

He signed a new one-year contract with the Florida Panthers last month.
