Supporters of Bridgeport Mayoral Candidate John Gomes gathered Sunday to call for an investigation into absentee ballots following Tuesday's Primary.
They held a news conference outside of the Margaret E. Morton Government Center to discuss a video that is circulating on social media. The video appears to show a Mayor Joe Ganim staffer depositing multiple absentee ballots into a ballot drop box outside City Hall.
Ganim was behind on votes during the Primary Tuesday night but won the absentee ballots by a 2-1 margin.
"We're demanding that a full investigation is brought upon what we saw in the video. It's very clear that she is committing absentee ballot fraud," said Jazmarie Melendez, of Bridgeport.
The city said it is looking into the allegations of breaking election laws and how the video was obtained and made public.
Ganim responded in a statement, "The matter in its entirety has been referred to the Chief of Police along with appropriate officials for review and investigation. I have full confidence in the Chief, the department, and appropriate agencies to handle the apparent illegal actions of any city employees as it involves the release of any city property, including video footage and any related legal or city issues."
