Delegates picked Beacon Falls First Selectman Gerard Smith to run against Sen. Chris Murphy at Monday night's state Republican convention.
However, there will be an August primary because Manchester businessman Matthew Corey - who lost to Murphy six years ago - got more than 15% of the delegates, receiving nearly twice that amount.
Other candidates could also collect enough signatures to get on the primary ballot.
