Low lying parts of Bridgeport have been impacted by the flooding news. Twelve's Frank Recchia has the story. Steady rainfall by nine o'clock Sunday morning, quickly results in flash flooding here on Thompson Street in the hollow section of Bridgeport, Rudolph hunt set out to go shopping but didn't get far. I was driving this morning coming this way. But when I reach right here and see the water, I said, oh no, I can't go through this. I cannot go through this water. This water is heavy and it's dangerous and it's rising just like hunt. Many drivers ended up going the other way to get to North Avenue and Main Street. A few opted to take their chances by going right through the water. Evelyn La Luz was not one of them saying to her, the situation was as clear as water, a flood, a river. Really? Yes, I was gonna go this way and as soon as I saw that, oh, no, I can't, I don't know if I'll be able to go through it. The bridge here and it floods with all this stuff. They don't even cut back the debris on the other side of Bridgeport. Freddie Nieves said chronic flooding has been draining money out of hard working people like him. As long as he can remember, we've been here for more than 20 years and this is just recurring every year. But state and local leaders say there is a wellspring of funding to help. If you know where to look this year in the budget, I was able to secure $47 million to be able to address the problem and work with the city of Bridgeport. And officials say as a result of Senator Moore's efforts, the city has been awarded a grant through FEMA to study different parts of Bridgeport. And in this study, we will be able to determine which areas have been impacted the most by flooding. And just to be clear, there's no Bridgeport residents that are going to be excluded from the review and the application of these state dollars which are greatly appreciated. But officials say fighting flooding in the long term will be an uphill battle requiring a short term fix. I'm going to be speaking with Governor Lamont and our federal delegation because clearly the flooding now and more to come deserves a federal disaster declaration that will provide aid aid. He says will help with flooding across the entire state. These men meantime say the help is long overdue for a community plagued by chronic flooding. They're calling on state and local leaders to make the fight against it an urgent priority so everyone can keep their heads above water.
