Governor Jodi Rell (R) defeated Democratic challenger John DeStefano Tuesday to win her first full term.
Rell became governor in 2004 after former Governor John Rowland was sent to prison on corruption charges. The victory keeps the governor's office in the GOP's hands in what is known as a heavily Democratic state. The governor drew a lot of support from older voters and captured almost two of every three independent voters' ballots.
Throughout the campaign, DeStefano, the mayor of New Haven, sharply criticized Rell fornot enacting universal health care or addressing high energy costsand the state's lackluster job growth.
