Brianna Alers, a 17-year-old anti-bullying advocate and student at Hamden High School, won the National Junior Olympics boxing title last week in Lubbock, Texas.
The teen trains at Stratford's Chick Rosnick Boxing Club.
“I was happy that it made my parents proud, my grandfather proud – just a really, really heartwarming moment," she said of her win after beating out 48 other competitors.
The title win could position her to be selected for the USA Boxing Team for the 2024 Olympic Games.
"Whatever goals I accomplish throughout my life, I just want to stay the same person -- the same kind-hearted person, and stay a role model to others," she said.
News 12's Frank Recchia spoke with her at her Hamden home.
