Supporters of refugees gathered in Highland Park Sunday to rally for those who are arriving from Afghanistan and around the world.

Interfaith and community groups came together as part of the seventh annual walk-a-thon to raise money in support of refugee resettlement.

In August, Join Interfaith Rise successfully raised $125,000 in an appeal for the Afghan resettlement emergency.

The goal of the walk was to raise $100,000.

"It means that humanity is still live, and that people have respect for humanity, and I'm really, really happy with these people and with Interfaith Rise and all helping refugees like us," said Sayed Mubariz, a beneficiary of the program who moved to the United States in June right before U.S. troops withdrew.

He says he hopes to write a book about his experience and eventually start a career in security or law enforcement.
