Gas prices, staffing shortages, beach badges, inflated food and beverage prices are all making a day trip to the shore not as affordable as it once was.

News 12’s Kimberly Kravitz was in Belmar this morning talking with small businesses and beachgoers as the summer season comes to end and asking them just how different this summer has been.

“In my opinion, there's not as many people coming down to the shore. Mainly because due to COVID – now people are traveling on planes going places,” said Tom Rogers, owner of Mamalukes. “Business is even with last year. Yes, our prices went up. I think people are a little conservative. I’ve been here 27 years. I’m seeing more and more coolers. People are bringing their own meals and I understand. People can’t afford between travel and fees involved.”

“We’re really busy. Everyone’s trying to get their last bit in before summer ends,” said Tim Somers, owner of Dunes Donuts in Spring Lake who have maintained their lower prices with long lines. “This is regular-person food. You have to eat. Nothing fancy.”
