Earlier this year Foran High school held a very moving ceremony, dedicating its softball field to the late Danielle Kemp.
Kemp, a Milford native, was just 19 when she passed away from an inoperable brain tumor back in 2017. Now she will be honored with three Division 1 teams, as they will play a tournament on that same field in her honor.
Sacred Heart, Fairfield and Kemp's former team Stony Brook will all compete in the inaugural DK23 Fall Memorial Softball tournament Sunday.
The idea for the tournament came from Kemp’s former college coach Megan Bryant during a recent visit to the field with Kemp's parents. Her former college coach says there's no better way to honor Kemp than by organizing a tournament for the sport she loved so much.
"Vivacious,” Bryant said of Kemp. “Fun loving, beautiful smile. She brought so much joy to so many people, on the softball field, off the softball field. We wanna continue to celebrate her."
The games start at 11 a.m. Sunday, and as of Friday afternoon, the weather forecast looks beautiful.
